Risk Disclosure
At Nikau Cave Ltd we are committed to delivering a safe and unforgettable caving experience. Our management and staff take all care to ensure your safety, however there is an element of inherent risk and hazards involved in caving activities. Risks may include slipping or tripping on uneven terrain, falling rocks, and rising water levels which may result in serious injury or death.
We have a strict externally audited Safety Management System which eliminates or minimises risks wherever possible. Our guides, equipment, and safety procedures are continuously assessed.
Know Before You Go:
Fitness
A good level of fitness and balance are required. Our cave tour involves walking over farmland, through water along a shallow stream bed that can be uneven and slippery, and up and down lots of steps. Participants must be able to walk unassisted. There is a 20-metre section of the cave where you will need to crawl on hands and knees through a shallow stream.
Feel free to call or email us if you have any additional questions about the level of fitness required.
Health
If you have any pre-existing health conditions that may impact your participation in a tour, such as asthma, joint replacements, or injuries, consult your doctor before booking a trip.
It is your responsibility to disclose any conditions (health or otherwise) that may affect the safety of yourself and those around you during a caving tour. Full disclosure to your guide before your tour departs is unlikely to prevent you joining the tour but will assist us in managing the trip to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all clients.
Safety Measures:
Gear
We supply an approved safety helmet and a waterproof torch.
Your trained guide carries a small first aid kit and two full kits are stored in the cave. All guides are first aid certified.
What to Bring:
Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Bring a light jumper, multiple layers are better than heavy jumpers.
Wear walking shoes with good grip.
Bring a full change of clothes for after the tour – you will get wet and we recommend having dry clothes and shoes to change into when you get back.
General Safety Tips:
Listen to your guide at all times, they will share important safety information before and during the trip.
Be aware of your surroundings and watch your head. There are a few places where you may need to duck to avoid hitting low-hanging formations in the cave.
Communicate any concerns or difficulties to your guide immediately.
By following these tips and all instructions from your guide, we can ensure a safe and memorable caving trip!
